Conforto’s Ninth-Inning Homer Can’t Save Cubs as White Sox Prevail in Extras

CHICAGO, May 17, 2026, 17:04 CDT

Edgar Quero crushed a two-run walk-off homer in the 10th on Sunday, giving the Chicago White Sox a 9-8 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Michael Conforto’s three-run shot in the ninth had brought the Cubs even, but the White Sox took the Crosstown Classic — Chicago’s city rivalry — two games to one at Rate Field.

This wasn’t just about city pride. According to FOX 32 Chicago, the White Sox hadn’t beaten the Cubs in a series since 2022. And both teams hadn’t faced off with winning records since 2008.

The Cubs slipped to 29-18, though they’re still holding the top spot in the NL Central—just a game and a half ahead of both the Brewers and Cardinals. As for the White Sox, they bumped their record to 24-22, now sitting a game back of the Guardians in the AL Central, per the latest MLB standings from late Sunday afternoon.

It was a quick jump out of the gate Sunday—Michael Busch launched a two-run shot off Erick Fedde in the opening frame, and then Fedde’s wild pitch let in another, stretching it to 3-0. Alex Bregman chipped in with an RBI single in the fourth. But the fifth inning flipped things: Andrew Benintendi drove in a run with a double, and Miguel Vargas evened it up with a two-run double.

But everything shifted late. In the eighth, Tristan Peters launched a three-run shot off Phil Maton, giving the White Sox a 7-4 lead. That didn’t last. Ninth inning—Bregman walked, Seiya Suzuki reached on a throwing error, and Conforto responded with a homer off Seranthony Domínguez.

The Cubs managed to add a run in the 10th, Bregman grounding out with the bases full. In the bottom of the inning, Rolison took the mound, but Quero finished things with his first homer of the year, one out in.

Cubs skipper Craig Counsell backed Michael Conforto’s start before first pitch, sitting rookie Moisés Ballesteros. “We’ve got a really good option here with Michael Conforto,” Counsell told reporters, and said, per MLB.com, it was “hard to deny Michael at-bats right now.” Mlb

Conforto delivered again, finishing 2-for-4 as the DH, drawing a walk, scoring once, and driving in three runs. Per MLB.com, the 33-year-old is batting .345 across 27 games, carrying a 1.111 OPS—that’s on-base plus slugging, tallying both frequency on base and power.

Quero put up a 3-for-5 line, driving in three and crossing the plate twice. Peters chipped in with a homer, three RBIs, two runs, a walk, and went 1-for-3. Busch launched a two-run shot early for the Cubs, while Conforto notched his third homer of the year in the ninth.

This series saw plenty of swings. Carson Kelly knocked in four RBIs on Friday, helping the Cubs to a 10-5 victory. The White Sox stormed back Saturday, blasting five homers—rookie Munetaka Murakami hit two of them—as they took it 8-3.

Still, the win came with plenty of mess. Domínguez blew a three-run cushion in the ninth, while Chicago’s bullpen surrendered critical home runs in both the eighth and 10th innings. Late-inning relief like that tends to unravel fast, especially with Milwaukee, St. Louis and Cleveland hovering nearby, all within striking distance of the Chicago teams.
