Rain Halts Tigers-Guardians at Comerica; AL Central Stays Close

DETROIT, May 18, 2026, 6:08 PM EDT

  • Detroit delayed the scheduled 6:40 p.m. start due to inclement weather.
  • Detroit walked into the series sitting fourth and slipping, while Cleveland held onto the top spot in the AL Central.
  • Comerica Park’s outlook is still tied to the severity of storms in the area.

Rain rolled in and forced a delay for Monday’s 6:40 p.m. EDT opener at Comerica Park between the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Guardians, with no word yet on when the game might start. The Tigers cited bad weather in the area and told fans to watch for more details.

This isn’t just another matchup pushed back on the schedule. Cleveland came in sitting atop the AL Central at 26-22, Detroit at 20-27 and fourth. Monday marked their first head-to-head this season, kicking off a four-game set between the division foes.

On paper, Detroit’s home numbers looked decent—the Tigers were 13-8 at Comerica. But they’d just dropped eight of their last 10. Cleveland, meanwhile, came in hot: 7-3 during that same stretch, with a 20-run edge over their opponents.

Before the weather changed things, Detroit held the edge. CBS Sports put the Tigers at -155 on the moneyline, and Cleveland at +130, with the over/under set at eight runs. Cleveland, according to the site, started the week just a game up on the Chicago White Sox.

Slade Cecconi was set to go for Cleveland, with Detroit starting Framber Valdez. Valdez worked 6 2/3 innings last time out, giving up just two runs. “Framber was dominating both sides of the plate,” Tigers utility player Zach McKinstry said. Angel Martinez, the Guardians outfielder, came in with a power surge but insisted he was “trying to not get too high.” Reuters

The weather threat wasn’t theoretical. The Detroit/Pontiac branch of the National Weather Service maintained a severe thunderstorm watch through 8 p.m. EDT, flagging the possibility of damaging winds, large hail, and the chance for isolated tornadoes. Forecast specifics for Detroit pointed to a strong likelihood of showers and thunderstorms Monday night.

Covering the Corner, which tracks the Guardians, called this series just the first chunk of 13 head-to-head matchups on the calendar this season. The site also flagged some pretty tight advanced stats between Cleveland and Detroit, particularly wRC+—that’s the park-adjusted metric where 100 marks league average. Cleveland sits at 102, Detroit just a tick behind at 99.

If there’s a prolonged delay or postponement, pitching rotations and fans’ schedules could be upended. The Tigers’ posted rain policy spells it out: before the first pitch, the home club decides if the field’s playable. After that, it’s up to the umpire-in-chief to halt, resume, or call off the game. Fans, for their part, are told to hang on to their tickets if things get pushed back.
